The 10th running of the Swift-Cantrell Classic 5k took place over Mother’s Day weekend with the luring threat of thunderstorms on the horizon. But, the rain held off giving the 850+ runners a dry, fast surface to put their skills to the test. The family-friendly yet uber competitive event is the opening race of the Kennesaw Grand Prix Series and is hosted by the Swift-Cantrell Park Foundation.

Forty-seven year old Steve Bell won the race with a gun time of 17:31, which bested the 2018 winner by 10 seconds. Bill Wileman of Marietta, GA won the Men’s Masters Division with a gun time of 18:28, which was good for 3rd place overall. The Women’s Overall Champion was Jenn Stocks of Dallas, GA at 20:58 (12th overall) and Brenda Christian of Marietta, GA won Women’s Masters Division at 23:45 (55th overall). “I love seeing the running community come together and support each other and our race,” said Swift-Cantrell Classic Co-Director, Lee Elliott. “The mood surrounding the Swift-Cantrell Classic is always so positive and encouraging, even with the weather looking iffy. I love the runners’ enthusiasm.”

The Swift-Cantrell Classic is a charity 5k that raises money for capital improvements to Swift-Cantrell Park. The money raised through the support of race sponsors and runner participation will go towards building an inclusive playground at the park. The playground will employ features that are fun and safe for all kids, regardless of ability.

“The City of Kennesaw has been really supportive of our vision of building an inclusive playground at the park,” notes Swift-Cantrell Park Foundation President, Phil Barber. “We are working hand-in-hand with the city and hope to have the inclusive playground built this year.”

The Swift-Cantrell Park Foundation would like to thank Orion Racing, the City of Kennesaw, Kennesaw First Baptist Church, Big Peach Running Co., and the 850+ athletes that competed in the Swift-Cantrell Classic.

Special thanks to the 2019 Swift-Cantrell Classic sponsors: Subaru of Kennesaw, ServisFirst Bank, WHI Eaton Chiropractic, Red Bull, Nichols, Cauley and Assoc., ServIT, Top Golf, Geo-Hydro Engineers, North Cobb Civitan, CrossFit Ho’Ola, Anthem Propane Exchange, Foster Insulation, Orcutt Law Offices, Celestial Jewelers, Yeoman’s Consulting Group, Tom + Chee, and Cookie Galleria.
